Although many may deny it, keeping track of the time is one of the primary considerations a person has. With so many things that must be accomplished in one day, it is necessary to constantly watch the time to make sure that everything is done on schedule. People have to make it to work on time and make sure the children make it to school on time.

There are other things to schedule in the day such as after school classes and sports, making it to the dry cleaners before they close and getting dinner on the table at an acceptable hour.

The consideration of time continues as people have certain television programs that they watch on a regular basis so they need to be in front of the television at a certain time to watch them. Cooking meals involves keeping an eye on the time so that they will be cooked properly and even doing laundry has a strong time factor. Setting the drying time for each load may vary according to the type of fabric and the size of the load. With so many time consideration factors, many may wonder how people managed before the advent of watches.

Prior to the invention of modern watches, a watch that was similar to a sundial was invented in 1524. The same way that a sundial reflects the hour, these watches only had one hand so it would also only reflect the hour. Still, it was such an innovation that it was extremely expensive and likened to precious stones. Because of that, it was not available to the general public for years. One of the most famous regions known for producing watches is Switzerland. They became famous for their watches over 500 years ago and continue to be a leader in the watch business today. Although 500 years ago, their watches left a lot to be desired in accuracy, today they are nearly unrivaled in their reputation for timekeeping precision.

In the 1600s, Swiss watch makers found a way to use springs in their timepieces to help improve their accuracy. Back then, men wore watches that were worn around the neck. Pocket watches that were attached to a chain took over in 1675. Today, they are still popular and come in cases that have a variety of themes, such as fishing, golf, hunting and trains. Many men love to receive this type of timepiece as a gift because since it is not worn on the wrist it is less subject to being damaged by being bumped around throughout the day. Instead, it remains safely in the pocket where little harm can come to it.

In 1893, the Wenger Company was founded and began to produce quality watches that are still regarded as classic timepieces. Despite the fact that management of the company has changed throughout the years, the quality of the watches were never compromised and their watches are still as coveted today as they were over a century ago.

If you have ever worked for your company’s marketing department, you will know the importance of keeping your clients’ goodwill. Keeping clients happy is a time-honored strategy, and no one is better at this than corporate America. In fact, giving promotional items, or things with your company’s name on it, is considered part of a marketing plan.

So, what is the best present to give to clients?

Try pocket watches. A good present is one that has combines utility with physical beauty in equal measures. No executive gift is as elegant and tasteful as pocket watches. Not only is it useful, it is historically significant, too.

In 1542, a man named Peter Heinlein made a portable watch, which he kept in his pocket. This carry-around watch greatly helped in the creation of navigational maps. Throughout the years, pocket watches became staple accessory for the nobility. It was not used by people from all social classes until the early 1900s.

The beauty of pocket watches is that they are small and highly portable. Additionally, they may be used as a practical addition to one’s wardrobe. They come in many elegant styles and no matter what your clients’ industry may be, you will never run out of pocket watches that will prove useful to them. After all, who does not need a watch? Who does not need to know time?

Most companies set a limit on the amount that should be spent on executive gifts for clients. This will not be a problem should you decide to purchase pocket watches. Pocket watches have prices ranging from the ridiculously low to the inordinately high. Additionally, your clients’ diverse fashion styles will not pose problems, too, because pocket watches may be worn in a number of ways. They may be worn as necklaces or cufflinks. Or, you could simply put them in your pocket.

A good way to personalize the pocket watches you give to clients is through engraving. Aside from having your company name and a brief message written on pocket watches, you could also add the clients’ names. Engraving will make clients feel special because it sends out the message that the company knows them by name and took the time to have these names etched onto pocket watches.

Another way to personalize pocket watches is through design. This is done so that clients can make the association between the timepieces and the products or services your company provides. For example, if your company manufactures shoes, the pocket watches may come in the shape of a boot or a sole. Or, it may have a shoe logo on its face.

The marketing possibilities where pocket watches are concerned are endless. In your choice of pocket watches, however, be sure you pick those that capture both the attention and the imagination. Giving executive gifts is an excellent way to maintain a positive relationship between the company and its clients. More often than not, the gift you choose will come to symbolize, for the client, everything that the company stands for. In picking out the pocket watches to give to clients, be sure you choose the timepieces that can do the talking for you.

Looking for a Timely Gift?
Maybe your loved one is a fan of the classic, but you’re not too sure if a pocket watch is the right gift – it’s quite bulky to use everyday after all. If this is the case, then you can try vintage watches.

Buy A Pocket Watch As A Memorable Gift
Many people make collections towards a retirement present for a colleague and what could be better than a specially selected pocket watch. This was always the traditional retirement gift.

Pocket Watches

A silver pocket watch is something other pieces of jewelry are not: it is timeless. Pocket watches are the very epitome of elegance. They exude quiet wealth and charm, and give their bearer distinction.

Pocket watches are personal timepieces that can be carried around in one’s pocket. They are strapless, and they sport traditionally analog displays. Though not always a present feature, silver pocket watches often have a hinged cover to protect the watch face. Fobs or pocket watch chains are always present to secure the timepiece to a waistcoat, belt loop, or lapel. Most antique pocket watches also have fasteners designed to be put through buttonholes and worn in a waistcoat or jacket.

Keep It Open, or Keep It Closed

Pocket watches could be any one of two types. The first type are open-faced watches, or hunter-cased, often known as Savonette. The second, and possibly the most common type, has a hinged front cover that protects the crystal face of the watch. Traditionally, the stem or pendant of a Savonette is set at its twelve o’clock position. The hunter’s stem, on the other hand, is placed at the three o’clock position.

Modern manufacturers of new pocket watches, however, are not bound by tradition, regardless of the cases they use. Sometimes, mechanism intended for modern wristwatches are being used in silver pocket watches nowadays. This is a trend virtually unheard of with the old, classic silver pocket watches.

Pocket Watches on the Railway
The last half of the 19th century saw a rise in railroading, as well as the use of silver pocket watches. Old pocket watches became a requirement for all railroad workers, for the sole reason of preventing train wrecks. After a massive train wreck in Kipton, Ohio in 1891, railroad officials established a precision standard for railroad pocket watches. In 1893, stringent standards for silver pocket watches were adapted in railroading.

Pocket Watches Today

In modern times, silver pocket watches have become collectors’ items. An antique pocket watch is bound to catch the attention of enthusiasts. Pocket watches have also considerably increased in value. Despite their plain faces, railroad pocket watches are particularly appealing for the quality of their craftsmanship. There are also several vintage pocket watches worthy of mention.

An Elgin pocket watch made 50 to 150 years ago can still be of practical use today. These pocket watches are considered symbols of America’s rise from an agricultural country to the powerful industrial country it is today. Waltham pocket watches were the first antique gold pocket watches to be mass produced, with the idea of producing gold pocket watches at an affordable price.

Hamilton pocket watches are known for their precision. In fact, most of their watches became the standard for railroad pocket watches. By 1923, 53 percent of their production was solely dedicated to the manufacture of railroad pocket watches. Another antique pocket watch worthy of mention are the very rare and much sought-after Verge pocket watches.

The pocket watch is a survivor. It survived the painful beginnings of the railroad system and is still worn today, in the age and place of commercialism. Beautiful, exquisite, and timeless, the pocket watch will undoubtedly be around for years, perhaps even centuries, more.

You never leave the house without your silver pocket watch. You bring it with you everywhere you go. It has been with you through birthdays and divorces, promotions and demotions, and even moved with you across states! With such frequent and heavy use, your silver pocket watch is bound to show signs of wear and tear. Your strongest and most persistent foe, in this case, is tarnishing.

What Causes Tarnish
Silver, whether real or plated, is metal. Humidity and chemicals in the air can cause it to lose its beautiful luster. These two, however, are not the only causes of tarnishing. Silver may also become tarnished upon exposure to salt, wool, felt, rubber bands, carpet padding, sulfur in the air, latex gloves, and oily residue left by our hands and fingers. Even food could tarnish your silver money clip, too. Tarnish-inducing food include onions, eggs, mayonnaise, and salad dressing.

Preventing Tarnish
The silver lining in this particular cloud is that tarnish may be prevented? How? Through proper storage and care of your silver pocket watch. Treat your beloved silver pocket watch as you would a favorite necklace or a pair of earrings.

When not in use, wipe your silver money clip clean. Wash it every now and then in warm water, using phosphate-free detergent. Then, dry it wit a soft cotton cloth.

Cleaning Silver
The worst thing that you could do to your silver pocket watch is put it inside a dishwasher. Your silver pocket watch is not a plate. Do not lump it with the kitchenware. The detergent and high temperature in dishwashers will leave your silver pocket watch looking dull.

The proper way of cleaning silver is as follows:
1. Wash with phosphate-free detergent and warm water.
2. Dry with a clean and soft cloth. If you don’t have this, you may use soft cotton ball.

3. While wiping, be sure to rub in a straight, back and forth manner to maintain a uniform appearance. Do not rub in a circular motion.

Removing Tarnish
Tarnish comes in different colors. Yellowish to brownish hues indicate the tarnishing is in its early stages and is therefore easier to remove. They may be washed off with warm water and phosphate-free soap. Or, they are simply wiped off by a polishing agent.

Black discoloration, on the other hand, is a sign of advanced tarnishing. To remove tough blemishes, use chemical dips. Professional silver restorers use chemical dips for black tarnishes that cannot be removed by liquid or paste polishes. Under no circumstances should you use toothpaste as a cleaning or polishing agent. Toothpaste has particles that are abrasive to silver.

Silver, whether plated or the real thing, is no different from people and ideas. It cannot survive the test of time without some help.

At the end of the 19th century, each town and hamlet in America made use of a different time standard. As a result, there were fifty separate times that were used by the railroad companies.

Under these conditions, it is no surprise that catastrophic railroad accidents happened all the time. It was obvious that the personnel required precise watches.

Hamilton Watch Company represented one of the solutions. By supplying railroad companies with amazingly accurate timepieces, the Hamilton watch helped to save countless lives. What also helped was the adoption of a standard time plan. The four time zones, namely Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific were set up.

The Hamilton timepieces also played an important role in railroad safety at that time. As a proof of this stands the fact that the Hamilton watch was called "The Watch of Railroad Accuracy". In newspapers there was stated that the personnel of the railroad companies depended upon the precision of these timepieces as a matter of life and death.

The beginning of this watch maker’s history is also marked by the watch book it published. The Timekeeper included descriptions of all the models, as well as relevant data about the timepieces that were produced at that time by Hamilton. People were actually recommended to read this book prior to buying a Hamilton watch, in order to be sure that the right choice was made.

The personnel of the railroad companies were not the only ones to wear these watches. The railroad inspectors were also among the customers of the Hamilton watch company. More than that, while satisfying the needs of the railroad company workers, Hamilton watch also produced timepieces that were adequate for many other people who were looking for a top quality watch.

It is obvious that at that time, that pocket watches dominated the market. The change was determined by the American doughboys who discovered while in Europe that the wristwatches are far more convenient for their needs. At this point, Hamilton watch company, along with the other American watch makers, decided to start producing wristwatches. These were further used by the train engineers and in general, by the railroad personnel.

In January 1957, this watch manufacturer launched the world’s first electric wristwatch. As it was a premiere, this shocked the industry quite a bit. The battery was said to offer a power reserve of one year. In these conditions, the mainspring became useless.

There is no doubt that Hamilton continued to successfully serve the railroad company workers to this day. Its long experience has really made the Hamilton watch a trustworthy timepiece.

Collectors realize that pocket watches have been around for years and with the invention of the them individuals were able to do things they were not able to do before. Antique silver pocket watches are particularly sought after. Learn more about pocket watch collecting here.

Captains on ships were able to calculate with a great ease the location of their ship more accurately, which increased the likelihood of their safe return as well as their cargo and crew.

The earlier varieties did not have protective face covering or an hour hand, but during the 1700s watchmakers began creating silver and gold cases to store them in for safe keeping while moving about. Those manufactured by Walthams are highly sought after by collectors all over the world, who want to add this high quality collectible to their collection. Waltham pocket watches were actually the first mass produced ones that had interchangeable parts, however small their total production was.

Another type for collectors to focus their collections on would be railroad designed ones. A commission was set into place for all railroad engineers to use pocket watches after a fatal train wreck that occurred on the nineteenth of April of 1891, when the watch that an engineer was wearing stopped for four minutes and then started again. This mechanical error resulted in a train wreck that caused nine individuals to lose their lives in Ohio. The railroad pocket watches themselves had particular standards that included, they had to contain at least fifteen jewels, black Arabic number, the size of sixteen or eighteen, and it must be able to compensate for different temperatures. After 1886, the number of jewels within them steadily increased.

These standards were at times broken and railroad varieties can be found with Roman numbers, which originated in Canada. Railroad pocket watches had to be durable enough to withstand constant abuse it could take from the jarring and swaying of the trains. Railroad management enforced their rules on the pocket watches. In fact, railroad engineers were required to have them regularly inspected and to even submit certificates stating that it was reliable to their supervisors.

Some novice collectors misunderstand what the pocket watch size means. It does not represent the width or the length or its case. In fact, it is the actually standard measurement for the size of the movement, which is between zero and twenty-three. Requirements for the railroad meant that the pocket watch movements had to be a size sixteen or a size eighteen.

Collectors have found the railroad variety with a special appeal for several reasons although their faces are plain. One of those reasons is that the quality of these is very high and they are mass produced like other ones are. Another factor that adds to their appeal is the ever lasting appeal of the historical value and the romance associated with the railroad itself.

Collectors can determine the age of the pocket watches with their collection by finding a reference guide and looking up the serial numbers by the manufacture or collectors can use the Internet to search by manufacture. On American pocket watches the serial number can be located on the movement inside, but earlier English models have special markings that can be researched to determine the age.

When you are in the market for the best vintage railroad pocket watch available, something noteworthy is that they have only every been manufactured in the USA, and have had particular standards that had to be met. The size of the movement also needs to be paid particular attention to.

The size of the watch’s movement is determined by measuring the dial across the centre and then through to the point where it is the narrowest. The standards set by the railways meant that the watch was required to meet size 18 or 15.227 mm precisely. A larger size of 16 or 16.919 mm came into force in the 30’s.

Additionally, the watches became open faced instead of enclosed in attractive hinged cases, and they now used Arabic numerals instead of the familiar Roman numerals. Every watch used a minimum of 17 jewels in its movement. There were 5 positions that each watch had to have the ability to be adjusted to, these being face up, face down, crown up, crown down, and sideways. An accurate time within 30 seconds of the week were expected of each railroad pocket watch. They were also required to be able to compensate for the temperature range of 34 degrees to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. These were mandatory and with these standards and requirements, it meant that these particular railroad vintage pocket watches were unsurpassed during the time of their manufacture.

The railway industry went through an incredible growth spurt and American watch manufacturers had to rise to meet the challenge of making watches that had to be more and more accurate, and they frequently surpassed even the standards and requirements of the railroads. Keep in mind that during the 1800’s, trains were the not only the primary mode of transport, but they also carried valuable goods for trade and industry. This was one of the major reasons why typical conductor railroad watches, which we now know as antique pocket watches, were crucial.

Punctuality, however, was not the only thing at stake. The watches had to be accurate to ensure that no accidents happened. Every day there were literally hundreds of trains to manage, and they all had to keep exact times. If the precise time wasn’t kept, accidents could happen. For example, when tracks were switched on a scheduled time, if times weren’t on time, they could collide, so precision was crucial.

One famous collision occurred in 1891 in Kipton, Ohio and was due to the fact that the conductor’s watch was late by a mere 4 minutes. This was the incident that prompted the government to issue the standards for the railroad pocket watches. The first company to comply with the requirements set by the railways was the Waltham Watch Company, but these were very quickly followed by all of the major watch making companies that we are familiar with today. These include Illinois, Elgin and Hamilton. These are the vintage pocket watch that frequently feature as many as jewels and no less than 6 adjustable positions in substitute of the recommended 5 that are most wanted after by collectors and have the most value.

Getting that perfect pocket watch is just the first step. The next step would be knowing how to wear it. There are actually a lot of ways on how to wear a pocket watch, and it is completely up to you to determine which suits you best.

The first step here is to choose the particular chain you would use in wearing your pocket watch. One such sample would be the belt clip chain. The belt clip chain was first used during the Edwardian period, and it lasted all the way up to the 1930’s, about midway through the Art Deco period.

The typical belt chain back then had pinstripes or geometric shapes. Some even bore the initials of the owner, giving it a more personal touch. With the belt chain, all you would have to do is slide the metal piece right over your belt. The metal piece comes with a chain that holds a swivel at its end, which would then hold the pocket watch. With just enough length for the chain, you can then keep your watch inside the pockets of your very own trousers. And don’t be afraid to wear your pocket watch with jeans, as that small coin-size pocket just above the regular pocket makes a great place to tuck your watch.

The buttonhole chain is a popular choice as well. The chain itself is attached to a button. It does not really matter what kind of button it is attached to. Whether your button is a fancy metal one or one that is made of leather, the buttonhole chain works just fine. All you have to do is insert the button right into its corresponding hole, and let the chain fall into place. Your pocket watch can then be safely kept inside a pocket nearby. There is not much worry about the chain being tangled up because it is actually attached onto the outward side of the button.

The fob chain, which was introduced during the Victorian period, remains quite the favorite at present. Using this chain is quite simple. Your fob is attached at one end, and the other has a connector for the pocket watch itself. The watch is then tucked safely into the pocket, while the fob would be dangling for the sake of fashion.

What is great about these fob chains is the fact that the fobs come in various designs. Many women enjoy flowery designs, and even lockets, for their fobs. Men, on the other hand, often go for fobs bearing designs of organizations, such as fraternities, clubs, and the like.

These are just some of the popular ways that you can wear a pocket watch. Other chains include the garment clip, the T-bar chain, the spring ring chain, the slide chain, and the watch pin.

When you see someone using a pocket watch, there is something that almost takes you back in time to a more elegant era. With so much new technology and everyone zipping from one place to another, the sophistication that we once knew has been lost.

Gone are the days that men and women dressed in their best to go out on the town. That time has been replaced with the wearing of shorts and jeans, flip flops and t-shirts. Wouldn’t it be nice to capture some essence of the class and sophistication that existed in the past?

It is possible to bring a little of the fading sophistication back with pocket watches. Pocket watches are a great way to check the time while adding something special to your look. Whether you are out on the town, attending a meeting, or at work a pocket watch is a great way to add a little bit of class and flair to your attire. Catch people’s attention as you slip the elegantly styled watch out of your pocket to check the time. With the great feature of the pocket clip, you don’t have to worry about it falling out of your pocket and losing it. Whether it’s a simple design or something more elaborate, you are sure to catch people’s eye with an elegant pocket watch.

If you are looking for a great gift for the man who has everything you might be faced with the dilemma of what to get him. He will surely appreciate a gift that he can use, and also pass down to his future generations. It may seem that such practices seem old fashioned and dated, but are often the perfect way to show someone how much you care. Since pocket watches had faded out of regular use, it would be a great gift. Pocket watches are elegant and can be engraved with special meanings that only add to the sentiment of such a gift.

Show someone how much you really care about them. Help to bring the sophistication, style, and class that pocket watches offers back. Don’t settle for a regular wrist watch when you can make a statement with a beautiful gold or silver pocket watch.

Discover how simply taking out your pocket watch to check the time can turn into a conversation opportunity with your boss, coworkers, friends, and even family. If you are meeting your girlfriend’s parents for the first time, impress her father with a distinguished style that sets you apart from anyone else.

Whether he has a birthday, graduation, anniversary, promotion, or any other special event coming up, be sure to get him a gift that shows him how much you care; get him a pocket watch. Help him to set himself apart from all the rest, add an elegant flair to his style, give him a gift that will stand the test of time, a pocket watch is an extraordinary gift that shows how much you care.

Pocket watches make great gifts! My wedding was coming up in 30 days and I was not sure what do buy for groomsmen gifts. After looking at everything from beer mugs to money clips I was still not sure what to buy.

My mother came up with the suggestion of purchasing pocket watches as groomsmen gifts but my first reaction was: "Are you kidding Mom? Pocket watches are old fashioned. When I think of pocket watches I think of giving a gift like that to my grandfather or father, but not groomsmen gifts for an upcoming wedding.

I was wrong and I’m glad I took my mother’s advice. I purchased eight custom engraved pocket watches as groomsmen gifts and my friends absolutely loved them! I was surprised at how everyone responded to these unusual gifts. The best thing about engraved pocket watches is they can be personalized with the recipient’s name or initials along with a special message about the wedding (which my wife-to-be just loved).

The only consideration I had was whether to purchase battery operated quartz pocket watches or mechanical pocket watches. Quartz pocket watches are very accurate and in most cases less expensive than mechanical pocket watches. The downside to quartz is that the battery will eventually need to be replaced. Mechanical pocket watches are more expensive and in most cases they have to be wound everyday. Mechanical pocket watches use springs and gears and they are not as accurate as quartz models. In the end I chose the quartz style as groomsmen gifts. The price was very reasonable at $50 each but I could have purchased quartz models for as little as $20 each.

The next decision I had to make was where to buy them. The Internet has many places to purchase pocket watches but after much research and a recommendation from a friend I decided to order my groomsmen gifts from a company called Gunther Watch located in Carlsbad, California.

The prices were great but the engraving options they offered were far superior to anything else I had seen on the Internet. I called the company and spoke to a guy named Scott to explain that I was pressed for time and the engraved pocket watches had to arrive in less then 10 days. Much to my surprise, Scott told me that this was not a problem because Gunther Watch stocks thousands of pocket watches at their warehouse and shipping within 10 days or less was going to happen. It did! I received the pocket watches and the engraving was awesome! I don’t usually recommend anyone on the Internet but Gunther Watch had excellent customer service. Basically - everything they said they would do… they did, and I cannot ask for anything more then that.

So if you’re looking for cool engraved pocket watches, you should visit their website. I have listed the web address below. I hope this helps you to make a good decision on what to buy for groomsmen gifts. It worked for me.
